On our last day in Paris, I still wasn't feeling good, but we went out anyway. We really wanted to get the Catacombs in on our stay in Paris. Once we were finally up, we went over there but found that, much to Reed's disappointment, it was closed due to flooding. Reed had also wanted to do the Paris Sewer Tour (also included on our museum pass). I wasn't sure what it would be like, but it was kind of interesting. It definitely smelled like a sewer and kind of felt like we were down in a cave wish water rushing through underneath. I don't have any pictures because of how poorly my camera does in low-lighting. After that we found some lunch and then headed off for Versailles. It brings you into a train station in the town of Versailles and then you have to walk to the castle about 5 minutes away.
It was quite grand but I really couldn't appreciate it as much as I should have because of how I was feeling. The heat didn't make it any better.
The inside was really cool. It's hard to tell in this picture but it was so colorful! Each room was a different color and you could see all the way through all the doors. There was red and gold and green and blue. It seemed like it never stopped.
I was excited to see the portrait of Louis XIV by Hyacinthe Rigaud, another one of those pieces of art that I learned about in my class.
The Hall of Mirrors was really cool as well.
The gardens were also quite beautiful. It cost more to go in them, so we didn't, but I did snag a few pictures.
From there, we went back into the city. I wanted to take Reed to see Montmartre because I really like it. It has an atmosphere that reminds me of Madison. It's kind of known for being an arts district and is just a really fun place. It is on a hill that looks over Paris. At the very top of that hill is the famous church Sacré Cœur.
The view from up there was pretty amazing.
It's also a big café/ restaurant/ souvenir shop place:
After that, we went back into the center of the city to do a night-time boat tour of the Seine River. It was really nice. Everything was so pretty all lit up.
When the boat ride was done, we went to Trocadero Square which has the best view of the Eiffel Tower to watch it sparkle at midnight. It was beautiful, but after that, I was definitely ready to go home and sleep, especially since we had an early train to catch the next day.
